This New Year's Eve, create a captivating look with an elegant updo that will last all night long. Here’s how you can achieve a hairstyle that sparkles as brightly as the festive evening itself, featuring tips from our founder and Hairdresser of the Year, Andy Uffels. At the end of this blog, you'll find an overview of the products needed to craft this glamorous look.
Step 1: Preparation
Wash your hair with a volumizing shampoo followed by a light conditioner – just your regular routine. Then, apply a heat protection spray to shield your locks from the heat of styling tools, ensuring the long-term health of your hair.
Step 2: Drying or Blow-Drying
Pat your hair dry with a towel. Then, apply a mousse or thickening spray to create a solid volume base. Make sure to apply the product mainly to the roots! If you have thick hair with a natural wave, let it dry naturally or use a blow dryer with a diffuser for extra volume. The right size round brush is crucial - too small, and you'll have difficulty styling; too large, and you may end up with polished, flat hair instead of volume.
Step 3: Create Texture
After blow-drying, use a curling iron to add soft waves for texture, not full curls, just a wave, providing the perfect foundation for your updo. Remember, keep your curling iron below 195 degrees to protect your hair.
Step 4: Pulling Back
Gently pull your hair back into a high or low bun or chignon at the back of your head. Before doing so, apply a dry shampoo at the roots for texture! Then make a low ponytail before creating the bun or chignon, giving pins more grip and ensuring your look lasts longer. Use pins that match your hair color to keep everything in place.
Step 5: Final Touch
Add some festive hair accessories like a sparkling hairpin or clip to accentuate your look. You can also loosen up the style by pulling out a few strands for a more casual appearance.
Step 6: Fixing
Use a flexible, light hairspray with good hold to set your style without weighing it down. The choice of hairspray is crucial, as its scent lingers in your hair! Carry a small touch-up kit with you when you go out – extra pins, mini hairspray, and a small jar of hair wax or pomade for quick fixes.
Aftercare: The Day After
After a night of partying, start the next day with a gentle shampoo to remove all product residue.
Deep Conditioning
Treat your hair with a deep conditioner or hair mask to restore moisture and nourish your hair.
By following these steps, you'll ensure an unforgettable New Year's Eve look that will draw everyone's attention. And the next day? Your hair will thank you for the extra care!
Have lots of fun and a beautiful new year filled with love and gorgeous hair!
