Interview with co-founder and award winning hairstylist Andy Uffels.
When and how did you come up with the idea of The Insiders?
Andy: “On a sunny Friday morning, spring 2013, after many business years of sweat and tears and personal ups and downs, our ultimate dream and creative ideas finally came together. My business partners Penny Slaney, Loes Schouten and myself decided to follow up on our dream and make it real. The Insiders was born. For me personally, it was a logical and natural step to move into developing an exciting brand, with all the experience, access to trade secrets and the great network of experts around us. And our team has so many great ideas…we just had to do something with it”.
How do you want the team of experts to express these ideas?
Andy: “We, as founders, love making dreams come true. For ourselves, for the people around us. And we get a real kick when ideas evolve from scratch into the absolute walhalla. To commit to the idea to seeing it realised, is what makes it worth going for it. This is how every single product from us, was born. Born by intuition rather than calculated. All of our products started with an idea from one of our expert stylists. Every product is part of the whole story. Later, we create and develop the product as a team. That’s so much fun. I just love working together with passionate people”.
Can you tell us a bit more about the brand personality?
Andy: “All of us look at ourselves as no nonsense, open minded, free-spirited people. Our hearts are diverse and have one thing in common; we have dreams and ideas to live for. And we believe that we can turn them into reality. And we do so. People always come first before anything else. We are honest, transparent and authentic. Always.
We have such a broad interest in things. When we meet up with our colleagues who advise and sell The Insiders products, it’s not just the ‘hairtalk’ we talk about, but we share stuff like being mindful and staying healthy, emotional and spiritual developement, business investments, how to grow and how to party. In fact, we’d love to call our colleagues; ‘The Insiders community’. We believe all of the people at The Insiders community are true experts. They are amazing people. They love to create and they really know hair.
We enjoy life. We want to have a bit fun too, you know. Hanging out with nice, interesting people that can make you laugh or cry. With great food to accompany. And we love to travel, to explore the world and to discover beauty in all aspects of life.
How do you see the future of The Insiders?
Andy: “We like to shake things up a bit sometimes. It’s fun to think without limitations, being creative and challenge routines. It’s fun to be optimistic and to surprise. That’s what we do, whenever we have a change. And we will continue doing that. Fits with the free- spirited mind, we guess.
And within our community, we have full respect for each other, we help and support where we can. We inspire. We share. We trust. We award others for great ideas. And, of course, we will continue to create amazing products that people love”.
What type of people use The Insiders products?
Andy: “Well, first of all, we are a unisex brand. Insiders people like to be in control, they use common sense, are interested in hair and beauty and expect to see results. They want products that do what they promise, give a long-lasting effect and a professional result. Insiders people get really enthusiastic for new products that add something to their daily styling routine. To be able to create a specific end-look much easier. And, very important, they want products that are just good for hair. Products that have natural ingredients and made by experts. Naturally, by using and loving our products as well as feeling connected to our brand personality, people become part of our Insiders community”.
Are you proud of what you guys have achieved?
Andy: “We are grateful, humble and proud. Yes. But there are so many cool challenges each day, there is really no time to rest. It’s a wonderful busy life. Having said that, we believe in the beauty of little things and we take time to enjoy it. A beautiful raindrop in autumn or a fresh flower in springtime can make us instantly happy. We never take anything for granted. And, personally, I love the fact that we really try to be intuitive all the time. To be sensitive and not to be distracted by anything else. In that sense, we are feminine. This is something that we should keep on doing all the time, to ensure people keep on loving our products”.
